Florida Supreme Court rejects transportation tax increase

The Florida Supreme Court struck down the voter-approved one-cent sales tax passed in 2018 by Hillsborough County residents.

The state of play: The 4-1 ruling declared that the tax’s “spending directives are unconstitutional in that they conflict with a state law that gives the county commission the authority to allocate such funds.” The decision is a blow to transportation progress.

Florida Supreme Court strikes down Hillsborough transportation tax

All For Transportation is dead.

In a 4-1 ruling from the Florida Supreme Court, the Hillsborough County transportation sales tax was overturned Thursday.

Hillsborough County voters approved a 1% sales tax in 2018 with nearly 60% of the vote.

But in a majority opinion handed down by Chief Justice Charles Canady, the Supreme Court ruled the tax was unconstitutional because it conflicted “with a state law that gives the County Commission the authority to allocate such funds.”
